"babel" by Baran
Screenplay by Guillermo Arriaga
(Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchet, Gael Garcia Bernel, Yuko Murata, Koji Yakusho, Adriana Barraza, Said Tarchani….)
It’s a long time since Babel was destroyed. Our miscommunication has had a long time to evolve, and here Mitsu(Yuko Murata) is standing naked on top of colors and noises of Tokyo, far above this crazy kaleidoscope , with nothing to cover her but her pain and loneliness.
Babel is said to have been the tower made in order to reach paradise by a united human society, and “god” angry with human beings going after name and seeking his glorious territory instead of worshipping their god, broke Babel into pieces and created different languages as barriers among his creatures.
Richard(Brad Pitt) tries to break the code and communicate with Susan(Cate Blanchet) who is drowning in her grief, and unable to do so he sits next to her in the bus in the middle of a foreign land surrounded by unknown people. Silence governs till tragedy hits them and the code breaks.
Here sad tragic events pour over every family’s life like ruins of Babel. And it’s through these tragic events that characters either fully awake to realize their communication gap or succeed in taking a step towards solving these miscommunications.
And as if language was not enough they confront a world based on differences: sexual, racial, social, economical…. Differences which are more pronounced in the post September 11th world, where a large number of people are the usual suspects.
Inarritu tells three interwoven stories, and he wisely chooses his locations to cover the whole world in a way: San Diego(California), Mexico, Morocco and Tokyo. He succeeds in picturing different layers of miscommunication, starting from the Moroccan family, showing difficulties they have in their relationships; father and sons, brothers, younger son and his sister. Then it gets to the next level, grief stricken Susan and Richard who are taking time together in Morocco, and yet it goes to another level, the Mexican nanny who wants to go to his son’s wedding but is trapped with her illegal situation with Richard and Susan’s children in San Diego, and then to show you the pure picture of this disconnection between us he takes us to Japan to show hard efforts of young deaf and mute Mitsu to communicate with people around her with no apparent success.
And Inarritu zooms out, now we can see the broader image, the miscommunication between countries and political leaders, between “3rd world countries” and the “developed” ones. He narrates the tale of a world which is full of misinterpretations, a situation fortified sometimes ridiculously in recent times.
Mitsu and her friends go to a disco, the place is filled with crazy music, dancing neon lights and drunk or drugged teenagers dancing to the music…And the camera turns and it is silent. You can still see the dancing neon lights, you can still see crazy happy teenagers dancing and kissing and partying but it’s absolutely silent. Now you’re experiencing Mitsu’s world and the gap is horrifying, mass of bodies moving in neon lights to an absent rhythm, and the camera turns again and you come back to the familiar place you knew, but now you can read Mitsu’s puzzled face smiling and dancing to a music she doesn’t know anything about. Inarritu takes you back and forth between disconnected communication lines.
To the end of the film some codes are broken, a lot are not and Babel’s dream seems to be out of reach.

"Slow" by Baran
-Here miss.
She turns and sees a middle aged man holding a lighter towards her. He comes over, lights up the lighter and brings it close to her face, slim beautiful fingers she thinks. She holds one hand around his hand, lighter and the cigarette and then takes a deep puff.
-Thank you.
She smiles faintly after saying this. He asks:
-Do you care if I join you?
She knowing that she may have a long wait in front of her just shows the other seat to the man and nods. He takes his bag and camera from his table and brings them over. She looks at the camera, it seems really professional. The camera is on the table now, just beside her cell phone. He is looking out of the window now, the sky is gray and cloudy, bare branches of a tree move slowly in the wind. He turns towards her:
-May I have a cigarette?
She reaches into her purse and brings out the cigarette box, shakes it gently and holds it towards him. He takes one and lights it up, she looks at the slim slender fingers, square finger nails. He is looking at her now and he smiles, not in a hurry to say anything.
-It’s going to be a long wait, she says.
-yeah…long day, but all days are long here.
And he looks at her cell phone. In a spontaneous gesture she puts her on the cell phone.
-Today is an extremely quiet day, you know.
She thinks oh so he knows it’s my first day here and she wonders if it’s that obvious or maybe it’s just because of the cell phone.
-You photographer?
He looks into her eyes and in a slow motion nods vaguely.
-for a news agency or..?
He looks outside the window before answering:
-No, nothing like that…just a personal diary.
She feels she had asked too much, a few minutes passes in silence. She is thinking of his imaginary book:” My personal diary of the war” and then she imagines her picture in it, a tired face in a far away café in a station in nowhere, surrounded by white strokes of smoke with a white big mug in front of her and a cell phone, a cell phone on the table and then she thinks what would be the name of this photo in the book, and she smiles out of mockery, a good name for it would be:” waiting” or maybe” deserted” or even” hope”…He touches her hand lightly:
-Hey…you ok?
And immediately they both burst into laughter, funny silly question. The laughter doesn’t last long, just a lightening and it’s dark again.
-how old is he?
She looks at him, her eyes suddenly shining:
-twenty six.
-When was the last time you talked to him?
-Two days ago…but the connection was cut in the middle of our talk, so…
-He’ll come…
She shrugs her shoulders and takes a sip of her coffee.
He says again:
-He comes…if…
-If what?
It takes him a while to answer; he is playing with his lighter:
-If he can.
She nods. He looks at her, she is not stressed by his answer, she takes another sip of her coffee:
- Yes’ he’ll come if he can, that’s what you would think…but he may not show up.
And she looks into his eyes now; her eyes seem to be hurt:
-He is that sort of a person, he may not come, just to avoid me or to be alone in his cave…
He let’s her talk, she seems tired. She looks at the cell phone now and she seems desperate, then she looks at him, he has a faint smile on his face and he says calmly:
-or maybe just to avoid the pain
She nods silently.
And then he reaches into his bag and brings out a role of contacts and puts them on the table and stares out of the window again.
She takes them and starts looking at the pictures.
Soldiers, children, women, old men, dogs…
And pain.
And disbelief.
Sorrow.
Silence.
Life.
And there he is, with a bottle of water in his hand, sitting on a dead tree trunk, staring hollowly at a little girl who held her dog tightly in her arms. A powder of dust covering everything. Silence.
A long time has passed, without a word. It’s getting dark. She raises her head, she knows every minute detail of that scene by heart now, puts the contacts back on the table. With a brisk voice she says:
-He won’t come.
Then she takes her mug and stands:
-Do you care for more coffee?

no title#5 by Baran
Let me tell you right away it was not my fault. Yes, that is true, I was there all the time, but it was not my fault. I was an observer, nothing more, please don’t tell me that I had enough power to stop it, you should know better, I did not. You know how her look paralyzes one, you know damn well how it arrests you…or do you? It leaves you standing there with close to nothing, unable to even say a word…but I have to make a confession, I knew it even before entering the room. I had seen it in her eyes, in each and every movement of hers from days before, but you know…well…I believed her. She told me everything will be alright, that we’re going to be even happier after this, so I believed her, I was hoping the time will wash it away from her body…yes I was wrong, it only grew bigger and bigger, yeah I know I was wrong like many times before, no you don’t need to tell me that this was important, let me tell you, I could not do anything to prevent it…you know I don’t remember when it all started, she told me it was not long ago, she said I won’t remember then, I was afraid but she was so beautiful and she told me it was ok , that it was not my fault that I didn’t remember…Ah her eyes; the blue seemed to be more grayish at those moments, even though I should tell that during the past few days they were full of fire, with a greenish hue…Oh yeah the days before that she tried to avoid looking into my eyes, she had kind of a hesitance, once I even tried to ask her but she just told me:” it’s ok honey, don’t you worry! It will all be ok really soon.” And even then she didn’t look me straight into the eyes. I am telling you, I could see it even in her steps, the way she moved her hip…Now wait a minute! Are you judging me? You better not! I am telling you, you better not...she never judged me, she always told me she loved me the way I was and once she even told me that she loved me more than ever because of what I had given her and then she looked down at her tummy and smiled…Her suffering was so glorious that I was astounded…Ah those screams. Loud, very loud, oh you should have heard them for yourself, as if with each one a part of her flew away and she got tinier with each scream… You remember, don’t you? She was a tiny girl, fragile sort of…oh her wrists, like a baby’s, so small, so delicate, I used to hold her wrists in my hands to see my red fingerprints on her white skin, no, no I didn’t press too hard, just a little, a tiny bit…But you know maybe you can help me, help me to understand it, my head was still banging with her last scream, I could not see anymore, she was not there, the room was turning around me, it was full of shadows, I felt weak and tired, everything was blurry, and then they gave me this wrap of white towel, I held it, something was moving very slowly inside it, so I moved the towel a bit and I saw a reddish skin, yes skin, and then just at that moment all the banging stopped. Silence took over for a few minutes, I was not afraid anymore, now don’t give me that look, even then I know that I should be sad, but I was not horrified anymore, it was as if I was covered with a big warm white towel myself…after a few seconds this vague sound broke the silence, It was from within the white towel I can tell, yeah probably it was from there, it was something .
between joy and sorrow, a weak cry, but it was beautiful, it felt familiar, yet I don’t remember where or when I had heard it before…you know that …that well my memory is not working well, that’s what they kept telling her, I think I saw her eyes once after they told her this , her wet blue eyes, and then she turned and smiled at me, she said:” no accident can take you from me.” Oh yes I remember it very well…Ah but that sound., I am telling you from that moment on whenever I hear that sound I have the same cozy feeling, and in those moments I can be confident that there was nothing I could do to prevent it. You see, I told you, it was not my fault, was it? Maybe if she was here she would have told you that it was not my fault…was it?!
[This could be beginning of a film, maybe about a psychoanalyst, maybe the story of this man’s life, maybe the story of the girl’s life, maybe the story of the baby’s…I don’t know. But if it is a film, you’ll see the film’s title right after the man stops talking.]

a peom by Baran

1" by Baran
